The VP, Merchandising Strategy & Insights will be responsible for spearheading the transformation of the merchandising and planning organization, driving more strategic and profitable investment through data-driven decisioning. This role with be pivotal in developing and executing the overall NM Merchandising strategy through strategic analysis and evaluation of brands by working directly with executives and cross-functional leaders on critical initiatives to realize our strategic objectives. This role will require a deep understanding of the NM Merchandising operating model, and the ability to perform analytics and drive cross-functional alignment to develop and execute strategies that support growth and scalability. Close working relationships with both the Digital and Analytics team will be needed to elevate the role of market trends and customer insights in the overall buying approach. A successful candidate will be an innovative thinker, balanced with a strong focus on customer, product, people and results. The VP, Merchandising Strategy & Insights will report to the SVP, Planning.
Additionally, the VP, Merchandising Strategy & Insights will directly oversee and further develop the Category Profitability & Insights (CPI) team. This team has been tasked with creating analytics-based tools / resources that help Merchandising leadership leverage the power of these data-based insights to drive brand insights.
Job Responsibilities -
• Create / implement a strategy that institutionalizes analytics-based insights as a key driver in all merchandising decisioning to influence profitability and CLV
• Serve as a strategic business partner to merchandising teams, helping to translate data analytics provided by internal business partners into actionable business insights
• Lead and contribute to complex and time-critical projects for senior leaders by quickly understanding context and developing a prioritized scope and approach for resolution in ambiguous situations
• Partner with merchandising leadership team to provide brand partner insights, leading rigorous profitability, brand loyalty, promotional and transferability analyses that will help tailor individualized brand partner conversations for GMMs
• Lead a team responsible for developing the tools / resources that will provide NM Merchandising teams with the market and customer-based insights needed to inform their buys (e.g., category profitability, brand performance).
• Oversee the analysis of market trends, industry benchmarks, brand economics, customer loyalty and product assortment to identify sales, cost and profit opportunities across all merchandise categories.
• Develop and implement standard operating procedures to ensure regularity and consistency in data analysis and reporting intervals for cross-functional partners and senior leadership.
• Oversee the development and delivery of key brand partner negotiation support materials.
• Lead and contribute to complex and time-critical projects for senior leaders by quickly understanding context and developing a prioritized scope and approach for resolution in ambiguous situations.
Preferred Qualifications -
• Extensive experience leading the development of merchandising strategy and analytics to drive business results
• Intimate knowledge of retail merchandising functions and category management
• Mastery of translating data into actionable insights that results in greater profitability
• Self-driven, innovative strategic thinker who is resourceful and can look beyond existing business and technology limitations
• Ability to persuade, influence, and execute innovative methods and processes
• Demonstrated leadership skills with an ability to motivate, influence, collaborate and work closely both in-function and across the organization
• Highly developed communications skills (written / verbal) and interpersonal savvy
• Demonstrated ability to drive results across organizational boundaries
• Merchandising background
• Consulting or house strategy function that is tied to merchandising
• Strong digital and customer data capabilities
Desired Education & Experience -
• 10+ years of relevant experience in management consulting, retail management, or growth strategy; experience in luxury retail is preferred but not required
• Experience working as a VP in a large corporation; ideally, in luxury retail
